Paintball TacticsGreat Paintball TacticsPaintball is, first and foremost, a strategy game that incorporates action; if your paintball tactics are shaky, then your game will be too. One of the best things you can do for your paintball game is work on your paintball tactics and strategy. But first, the difference between tactics and strategy: Strategy is the overall plan of attack. That’s the team leader who says, “Okay, you two swing around that way, you up into the trees, and the rest of us will head straight for the flag as a diversion while the first team snags the flag from behind.” Tactics involves the minute-to-minute planning – which tree? Who do you shoot? Where are the brambles and how do you avoid them?
Paintball: Strategies & Tactics Big picture versus your (or your team’s) part in it – strategy versus tactics. Paintball Strategy: You Swing Around There...Before even starting to play a paintball game, you should have your strategy in order. If it’s a new field, someone should go out and scout to find the lay of the land – where are streams? Good trees? Conveniently-placed deer stands? Are there hiding places to cache your weapons and ammo if necessary? The person scouting should draw a map for everyone else, and from that map you should plan your paintball strategy. To become good with paintball strategy, read some of the classics in the war strategy genre, like Sun Tzu’s Art of War. Strategy on a small scale is not much different from strategy on a real and large scale. The biggest difference is that small-scale paintball strategy doesn’t have anyone really dying, or bleeding (knock on wood). Pincer maneuver strategies, divide-and-conquer strategies, and sneaking-up strategies work exactly the same way in paintball tactics as in real military tactics. And don’t forget your equipment and other practical considerations. If you don’t care for your gun, it can break. You can run out of ammo. You can have flaws in your camouflage, or do something as simple and stupid as forgetting to go to the bathroom before climbing into sniper position (duh!). And your paintball tactics can kill you even if your strategy is brilliant. Tactics in Your Paintball GameOnce you have your strategy formulated and are starting to move in, paintball tactics take center stage in the thinking part of the game. This is where you decide where to put your foot, whether to shoot at that enemy soldier’s head, or which tree to climb. Paintball tactics can be very simple, consisting just of moving from hiding place to hiding place; or they can be complex and deceptive, luring your enemy out away from the flag while you burst in and snatch it away from them. Paintball tactics should also take into consideration fall-back positions, where you might stash extra ammo and perhaps a snack or two (carefully wrapped so opportunistic forest animals don’t sniff it out!). The best paintball tactics include communication, intelligence, covert operations, and supply chain problems when thinking about any issue. As you grow more experienced in paintball, your paintball tactics will improve. Use paintball videos to teach you more about paintball tactics, if you can’t play often. Read up on general war tactics and strategy. And role-play – think about different scenarios that could come up in a paintball game and come up with different solutions to the problems.
